Industria Ultima [2026]

print series

The capstone assignment for my minor in art & technology was to use Processing, a Java-based Integrated Development Environment (IDE), as an intermediary in designing a physical object.

Evocative artwork succeeds when the context and process behind it reveal the artist’s perspective. In my process, I felt strongly about constructing my work environment so that I would understand all variables relevant to each creative decision. Marshall McLuhan called technology an extension of ourselves. In this case, how can we create truly introspective work if we do not intuitively understand the technology we use to create it?

The process involved designing a workspace that allowed me to sample color ranges from photographs and apply a dithering effect (Bayer matrix) to blend abstract elements. Using 100 selected images from my computer, I reconfigured specific moments from my past into prints that tell a more holistic story.

In an age where artists have access to an abundance of creative tools, many of which we do not fully comprehend, it can be difficult to prevent the medium from diluting the message. To make digital art that is evocative, in a medium that is inherently extrinsic to ourselves, it is important to draw from within.
